Welcome to the Town of Garysburg!

Garysburg first appeared in official records as a post office named “Peeples Town” some time in between 1818 and 1825. “Peeples Town” or “Tavern” as it was also called, was located near the banks of the Roanoke River, a site south of its present day location. Roderick B. Gary, a native of the Town of Halifax, NC later settled in Northampton County, NC and gave “Garysburgh”, as it became known, its new name in 1838.  The name stayed as such until 1892 when the spelling was officially changed to its current name.  During the 1840’s the site along the river was abandoned, and people began to settle in a new site not too far away, now present day Garysburg.

Because the town was between the railroad and the river it served as a major market for Northampton County, NC and a point of interchange for commerce.

Garysburg’s Back to School & Healthcare Event

Garysburg Park & Recreation Department sponsoring a Back to School Blast / Health Care Fair, Saturday, August 26 beginning at 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Vendors are Welcome. Free school supplies will be given out.

The Garysburg Police Dept. will hold its annual National Night Out event on Tuesday, August 1, 2017 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. The event will be held at the Garysburg Community Center (formerly Garysburg Elementary School) 504 Hwy 46. Admission is free.

The Town is seeking food and craft vendors for the National Night Out event. There is no fee for vendors and there are no restrictions on what can be sold. Vendor applications are available at the Garysburg Town Hall and are due by Monday, July 31, 2017. Those providing amusement rides will need to show proof of insurance.
